What is a marketing engineer?

Updated October 14, 2026

A marketing engineer is a technical builder inside a marketing team. They build the automations, AI agents, and data pipelines that let the team run more work without a new hire for every repeated task.

The marketer still picks the offer, the audience, and what the customer should hear. The marketing engineer turns those choices into a system. Triggers, data, and checks replace a checklist someone repeats by hand.

A weekly export, a naming rule, and a Monday report are build problems. So is an assistant that should answer from real offers and past results, not from a blank chat window.

Media buying can sit inside the system. A marketing engineer builds the system that media buying runs on. The job is bigger than the clicks inside an ads manager.

I have built AI-powered marketing channels for local businesses. Those channels run Google and Meta ads, test variants, and keep updating ad creative and copy so CPA and CPM can improve.

The name

The company that popularized this title in 2026 is Profound.

Marketing engineering also has an older academic meaning. In that use, it means quantitative modeling of marketing decisions. That is a different thing from building the tools a team runs each week.

Easy to mix up

People often mix this seat up with a growth engineer. I keep that split on its own page, marketing engineer vs growth engineer.

If you want to keep reading

I wrote the daily work as its own page, what does a marketing engineer do. That one is the jobs. Workflows, data, agents, and how the tools connect.

When I do this for a local business, I call it marketing automation. Google and Meta ads, A/B tests, and new creative and copy.
