FAQ
Marketing engineer vs growth engineer?
Updated October 14, 2026
A growth engineer sits closer to product code, experiments, and product-led growth loops. A marketing engineer sits closer to the marketing and sales workflow and the data under it. Both are builder roles, and titles vary by company.
I have built AI-powered marketing channels for local businesses. Those channels run Google and Meta ads, test variants, and keep updating ad creative and copy so CPA and CPM can improve. That work does not change the product itself.
Growth engineer
A growth engineer usually works in the product repo. They ship experiments, onboarding changes, and loops that bring people back into the product. The score is often activation, retention, or another product metric.
If the fix lives in the app, you are probably talking about a growth engineer.
Marketing engineer
A marketing engineer usually works in the tools around ads and sales. They connect ad accounts, forms, and reports. They also build agents that reuse brand notes and past results.
The plain definition is what is a marketing engineer. The daily task list is what does a marketing engineer do.
How to tell the seats apart
Ask where the work ships. Product experiments point to a growth engineer. Workflows, pipelines, and agents for the marketing team point to a marketing engineer.
A growth engineer might ask whether a new onboarding step kept more users. A marketing engineer might ask whether a new ad test moved CPA, and whether the report updated without a manual export.
Companies still swap the titles. A fair read is about which seat the person fills.
Both people build. They build in different places.
I use that marketing seat for marketing automation on local ad accounts. That means Google and Meta ads, A/B tests, and new creative and copy.
